  • stubborn key on winch shaft

I am replacing the seals on the MU2. I got the large shaft keys out, but the small key that is on the worm gear shaft won't budge.
    Any tips?
I thought I would try the freeze trick next on it. Other option is weld on something to allow me to use a slide hammer.

    freeze trick worked,

Freezing it with the upside down can of air (computer dusting air) gave me just enough shrinkage to get a little movement when I hit it with a drift.
I cleaned up the marks on the key caused by the drift and I am now back in business.

Glad that did the trick. Other than welding it I couldn't think of any other options that weren't just as potentially destructive.

        BTW,
Thank you for your posting of the great pictures of your rebuild including the winch ones.
I am next going to replace the oil seals. I noticed the ones I got from VPW in the "kit" were the standard ones you see now, "open" on one side. The ones I took out looked a little more substantial; they had metal on both sides. Do you know if this latter type is available still?
One other comment. Has anyone heard of putting speedy sleeves on each end of the worm shaft? The shaft is a little rough from corrosion where the seals ride. A speedy sleeve might help things work a lot better as far as leaks go.

No, the one's in my kit from DC are the same. I'm not worried about them though. The lip seal on the new ones is much better than the old felt/leather seals I removed, even if the case isn't as strong. They're not structural items anyway.

I don't see why you can't redi-sleeve it if you can find one the right size. The biggest issue I could see is if the included installer cup will let you push it on far enough.

My biggest issue right now is deciding how I want to re-finish the case. Prime and paint it with the rest of the black components, or powder coat it and live with the blacks not matching.

            yes,
I thought the same thing; the sleeve has to go quite a ways on the shaft to be where the seal contacts. I will investigate. The shaft is 1.0"

NAPA had the appropriate speedi sleeves, part # 99100. Also the tool supplied to install it does look to be long enough.
