  • Rear main seal replacement

    have a leaking rear main. wanted to ask for some pointers on how to change it out. Thankyou.-Billy

    Have you started the job? Do you have the oil pan off yet, the rear main cap?

    I gather from your user name it is a 1963 WM300, is that right?

      I have the oil pan and main bearing off. Ordered the neopreme seal and pan gaskets. But this looks like quite the job. My only other experence was with a jeep motor. Seems a little hard to find power wagon help,not the same as the Willys jeep.
      Yes it is a 1963 wm300.

        Does your rear main seal [a two part unit] have a flange with holes for capscrews?

                Then, yes, just pushed in. Some tool suppliers have offered small, roughly T-shaped pieces that fit in a main journal oil hole, and used to spin out the upper half. You may not need such a thing, however.
