  • Speedo cable removal at TC

Does anyone have a good way or suggestion on a tool to remove/detach the female speedo cable end from the TC on the flat fender?
It is very difficult to do so and I find I need to remove the brake bracket to get to it, and even then it is not simple.
I have thought of fashioning a tool to help with this.

    Very strong fingers.

    Channellocks?

    I am trying to remember.

Hey Doc! The way you describe is the only way I've been able to do it. No room for channel locks or fingers....

            The tail would help.

Someone said the M37 version is hex shaped. If so, one could make or use an "oxygen sensor socket" - like tool to get it off fairly easily. I wonder if the M37 and civilian- repro cables are interchangeable.

                No they are not.
The m 37 uses a "tang" drive at the t-case. PW uses a square drive.

Besides the hex nut on the housing the drive gear in the T-case also uses an extension to move the hex connection farther out away from the brake drum, but not much.

Are you putting 4.89 gears in Kirkwood along with the OD?

No, For Kirkwood, just replacing all the seals on the TC with double lip due to a lot of leaking. IT got to the point I would have to add 85-140 monthly. Would leave a plate size spot on ground if hot. TC rebuilt 8 years ago with new bearings, speedy sleeves and seals.
For the M37 ("Bulldog") I am currently building, I do have 4.89's for it. I would like to get an adapter or change the gears accordingly for the speedo, but since it will be a resto-mod, maybe a programmable speedometer would be easier?

Doc, you should contact Tim Ellis. We set up Crusher with 4.89's, and got an external adapter from Delux Speedo and Radio in Denver.

Not much to the mills really, just keep the oil changed and tighten up loose stuff when you find it.

My buddies, in the second and third pic, taught me everything I know, always looking over my shoulder, making sure I don't miss anything.
