  • Sticky 4 wheel drive

Anyone ever have their truck not want to come out of 4 wheel drive?
Mine some times will not want to shift out of 4 wheel.
I cant see anything bent or stuck.
When it does it I need to put it into reverse and let the clutch out just enough to move it back an inch and then it will shift out of 4 wheel with no problem.
It does not do it all the time. Most times it shifts in and out with no problems.
There is no clucking or odd noise it just wont come out now and then.
Should I worry about this ?
The low range works fine all the time , its just the 4 wheel shift that hangs up now and then.

That is just a result of drivetrain binding. It is quite typical on older 4wd systems that you have to back up a bit to get everything to free up and disengage. I had an old 77 Cherokee that the owners manual had this bit of info in the 4wd section.

Driving on hard packed roads, in 4 WD, (don't have to be paved) will cause it, another cause is mismatched tires. Even if they're all 9.00 x 16's different brands, or different types, can have enough difference in diameter to cause binding.

OK, Wheew I figured for sure everyone was going to say that its going to blow a gear out the side any second now.
My tires are all the same,,,expensive...and I never run it in 4wd on the paved roads here unless there is a lot of snow and then only for short trips.
        Thanks for the info.

In your case it sounds like it boils down to lack of tire slippage at times, since you say it is only sometimes difficult.

I believe GSmith is referring to the action of the tires rotating, or "slipping" ever so slightly when the drivetrain requires it.

The system needs a little bit of give from the tires to come out of 4wd. If your tires don't do the giving, nothing else will. That's why your system sticks.

When backing up is not an option because of a lack of space to shift out of four wheel drive, jack up a front tire and most often the wheel will rotate several degrees relieving the drive train wrap-up.
