steering wheel

i have almost completed repair / restoration of my M37 steering wheel - it was in really bad shape - lot of the wheel had chunks missing and it appears some young lady carved her name in it a long time ago. anyway my question is what type of paint should i use to respray it?

since iv never seen a wheel in good shape is the finish a semi gloss black

I think they were gloss. Time hazes them to dull, but regular use has made mine glossy.

Sorry! I've been repairing my civilian wheel and had that on my mind. I have seen N.O.S. whels for the M series, identical to the civilian only green. They seem to take on a sheen as well...

Actually Dave the M37 wheel is not the same as a civillian wheel. There are a series of grooves around the rim of the M37 wheel for better grip, whereas the civi wheels are smooth. Also, the steering shaft is splined on an M37, and if I remember correctly, the Power Wagon shaft is keyed.
While there are a lot of black reproduction M37 wheels out there, the original ones were green.
