  • 230 gasket set

Does anyone know who's selling a good gasket set for the 230? I can't remember who I bought my oil pan gasket from but it was nos 40 years old and almost useless, I'm hoping to find something recent production. Thanks

I haven't bought one in a few years, but I seem to remember being able to get mine at one of the chain auto parts stores such as Oreilly or Autozone. And it was a good brand, such as Victor or Fel-Pro. You could also check with NAPA. They often have parts that are harder to find for these old vehicles, and good brands, too.

The guy that had my newest M37 bought a gasket set for it and threw it in with the deal. It's from Napa. I do not know what the brand is, it just says Napa on the box.

So, you could check with Napa.

VPW has new production ones too.

Napa has really nice Fel-Pro sets. If you have the early flange style rear main seal you'll have to order that separate. Set comes with later rope style rear main.

The old rope style rear seal is actually prior to the flange type rear main. Some of the older engines require the flange type, but all the T245 engines common to the M37 use the later slip on type seal, which is the easiest to work with and the best by far. Both the Victor and Fel-Pro sets are not complete in that they do not supply several of the needed gaskets used on the mil spec engine. The timing cover seal and the rear main seal is also excluded. The rope seal that is in the kit is worthless as that doesn't fit the application.

Another tip: purchase a National #6636S timing cover seal; this is an improved aftermarket version that does not require the oil slinger to be used, neither will you have to use a paper gasket under the seal in the cover. If the hub is grooved, a 99218 Redi-Sleeve takes care of that. This is a great design improvement that works far better than the original. While the BestGasket kit does include a timing cover seal, it is an earlier style that will not work nearly as well as the newer National.

                  gasket set

I looked into the best gasket set, it turns out that kanter who's about 5 miles from my house carries them, very nice kit it has everything. I'll have the cam in the truck in the next week or two, while it's torn down what are the pros and cons of shaving the head if any? I got the cam from Edgy speed shop, it has a .410 lift and 260 duration and is supposedly going to give me around 15 hp. thanks for all the help.

                    Great information, Charles!

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

If the head has never been cut; you can shave it .080" and help the cause quite substantially.
