  • Saginaw Power Steering Box Issue

OK, I went to prep and install the new (re-build) Saginaw reverse rotation power steering box on the M37.

In the above picture on the steering input shaft there is an extra smaller diameter shaft sticking out that I've NOT had on two previous boxs.

Did they put the wrong part in the box?

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Will

I don't know, I am not familiar with that. Ask your vendor about it, as a first step. Keep us posted.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

      What I learned/did

After getting two conflicting opinions, I finally got a hold of Cardone, and The Tech there said the pin was "a pilot or guide for installing the unit" and that "Most techs just cut it off."

I only need to shorten it by a 1/4" to clear the U-Joint, so I did. Thankfully it was still solid and I should now be able to install it with no issue.

It does appear to be the "cap" or Plug" in the shaft that holds something in. The spring just doesn't stick this far out on the stock box's.

          plug

that plug you see sticking out is actually the end of a torsion bar, cutting it won't hurt anything but try not to get it hot, might lose the springiness.

            Here it is installed

Only cut 1/4" off with a cut off wheel, and sanded smooth and clean. Clears now.
