Pintle Hitch Leather Strap

I am reinstalling the original pintle hitch back onto my WC53 and I remember seeing somewhere about a leather strap that went on the pull lever for single operator hands free trailer disconnecting. Its a really cool mechanism for hooking up but whats the deal with the strap? Where do you hook it / what does the hook look like for freeing the latch arm? Any pictures? Thanks in advance.

Heres my restored pintle hitch. Its weirdly a family heirloom... but thats a long story that might best be told in a PWA online article.
