    Tim,
The reverse curve on the rear tailgate can be a bear. I have seen many gates that just have the curve and a some with the reverse curve. IMHO the reverse curve looks so much better. I only know of one way to achieve this and its with an English Wheel. I scratch built a new tailgate and started to re-skin. It gave me major fits and I was working with one of the best Metal shapers out there http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sheet-Metal-...item19cf0c553f I have put it to the side and will drag my truck to his shop so we can fit it to the opening.

Gordon McMillan has a how to on what he did to repair his tailgate. I'M Sorry I don't have the link but you can probably find it by poking around this thread or the WWII Dodge truck website. Good luck

    • Thank you Archie. I think I am going to work on some other things and ponder the tailgate for a while.

On a side note (i also posted this on Joe's Forum) Can someone tell me what the different heights for the carryall body mounts (wood blocks and or steel cross supports) should be? All my files on dimensions went away after a hard drive crash.

      Thanks,

      Tim

      • So are you asking for the spacers height

        Wood blocks - 1 1/2 "
Rubber or webbing that is under the steel cross members - 1/4

        • Thanks Bruce that is what I thought. Trying to see where what is bent. the right side looks pretty straight. All the running board, battery box and fender supports look true. On the drivers side...they look snaggle toothed, so I need to measure to see if the frame or the brackets are bent.

From the 6 body mounting points, at the front of the cab with an inch and a half block, the middle and back are pretty much body on frame. When I got this beast, the rear of the body (under the gate) was welded flat to the frame.

One step forward and two back, but still making progress. also got some 16 gauge to start patching the firewall.

          • Progress of sorts

I made some braces , that look sort of stock , to strengthen up the cab . These sit just behind the doors and will stop any side to side racking of the body but are not big enough to look odd or trip over . I can not post pictures these days so you gotta use your imagination . Except for a few bolt holes the body is ready to come off the frame and get welded on the bottom . Getting the body off may take some thought .
A two post hoist would make body lifting a simple task . As it is I will need to resort to some rope and a sky hook .
Cold rolled steel is the only steel to use when patching , very welder friendly .

            • Hey Guys,

Don't want to hi-jack but was told to post my Carryall question here. Actually, already posted it here:

Just looking to take advantage of your considerable knowledge. Thanks!

              • WC53 value

Having the tailgate is a plus .
Having the wood floor with all the seat tie downs and strips is a plus
rear window winders are hard to find and seem to be unique to the carryall .
Drivers side running board is difficult to find ,
Battery box base and cover are tough to get hold of too .
Then there are all the rear latch hardware that seems to be missing in most cases .
So the more complete the better if you plan on a restoration .
A lot of these parts are not needed if you plan on updating the thing .
But the biggest expense is the body and work to repair and paint it . The costs add up fast . Paint , sandpaper , thinner , equipment , little tools , metal , filler all cost 3 times more than you first think ,
I got mine for $ 2300 , the body was really straight , no motor and missing all glass , seats and tailgate . I considered the price quite fair because of the condition of the body and all sheet metal .
So from what I can see from your pictures $2500 to $4500 .
Really do need better pictures .
Think of a picture as carryall porn . Once I see a picture I get all enthused and go working on mine .

                  • Carryall for sale , who will get this one ?

Hopefully not one of the resellers . Decent price , but there is some nasty rust . Personally I like the WC53 better .

                    • Body off?

Bruce, you can use my forklift. Thats great your ready to pull your body off, that means your getting closer. I am just about ready to put mine back on. The bottom, and inside have green paint, just need to go to the paint store and pick up two more gallons of OD. I should have all body paint sprayed this week.

Saw this one a week or two ago, and I agree, just something about the proportions on the 53 that make it look much sharper than the half tons! SOOO Excited to be picking up my 53 in only two weekends from now!
