I'm sure many of us have seen Alexander Tytler's observation on the life of great civilizations before in various forms. Although there is presently debate on whether the "Bondage Cycle" of the quote is actually his, the entire essay accurately reflects the human condition throughout history.
Looking at current events, I'd say we're headed for some very interesting times. The next couple of generations will have a huge mess to clean up, and it's an open question whether America will continue to exist. Hopefully the values some of us have endeavored to transmit to our successors will endure...
