  • How much noise in a normal 420?

I think I'm finally getting most of the unusual noises figured out and fixed in my '56 Power Wagon. The previous owner did great body work but did not focus on mechanicals, which I don't mind.

I am surprised how hard it was to find a shop to simply balance my tires... When I dropped them off I told the fellow here are my Prius wheels and tires, can you balance them..., He got a laugh.

This past weekend I installed a new clutch and re-worked the bushings in the linkages. Seems to be fine.

What I am not sure of though is how much of a racket do the 420's make at 25-35 MPH with the 5.89 gears? I'm pretty sure it is transmission noise, it goes away when I push the clutch in and cost. That rules out the transfer case I think.

It sounds like the syncro is making a racket when I'm cruising in third or fourth. I've got my old trans on the bench now to take my time and work on rebuilding that.
    Thanks Wayne

What gear are you in at that speed?

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

      Gordon:

I shift into fourth speed at about 20 MPH! The engine seems to be winding out then. It sounds to me like the syncro is "rattling" if that is possible. I'm looking at the old one on my bench now and I don't quite understand that yet. I do have the rebuild manual, so I'll dig into that more.

It is quite typical to find loose or broken stop ring legs on the NP synchronizer. They will rattle; that's the only issue I can think of that would cause a rattling noise within the trans.

Charles: I have the "old" transmission on my bench, and as I read the repair manual I can look at the parts they talk about.

Just looking at the snchronizer I don't quite understand it yet, and frankly the stop rings and everything else on it seem loose, enough so they would make noise. I'll dig into it more this week if I get time after work.

          Take care.

Wayne, if the balance job you had does not help, I wrote an article in the PWA last year about truing tires - I had that job done in Easton. They then balanced them with a strobe balancer. It was a big truck business, and the PW's tires were not considered too large for them.

              Doc:

Thanks. I talked to an old timer around here and he said they used to balance the tire, rim and drum all as one unit. That sort of makes sense.

I have my old 420 apart now. Other than the bad input bearing it looks fine.

I took apart the main shaft assembly last night. I now understand how the syncros work, which is kind of neat, but I wonder if people replace the infamous snap-ring (not the two part one) as a matter of routine when it is apart as preventive maintainance?

              thanks

The whole unit idea is what was done for me in Easton. They spun the whole assembly on the truck to balance. Makes great sense.
As to the snap ring, perhaps Charles can comment. I do recall hearing about that in other threads. Have you done a search of the archives about that?
