What's the best reference for the early (pre 1951) transmission rebuild? It's hard to find anything on the Web, as NP didn't assign it a model number, like the 420. Need something that goes in depth to teardown/rebuild, preferably with pics...

There is another way without the jack....

4X4's on the cab floor on either side of the trans and cut a 2x4 cross piece with a 5/8" hole in it to slide forward and back. A long piece of 1/2" all-thread, washers and nuts. Make a bracket out of angle to go across the top of the trans and bolt the bracket to the trans. Use the all thread to raise and lower the trans and slide it back and forth across the 2x4's. I did this with my old 66' TW and it worked great. The up side to this method is there is no chance of the trans slipping off the jack or issues with using a jack on uneven ground. Let it down, remove the nut from the All-thread and pull the trans out.

Send me an email and I will send you a soft copy version of the manual for the NP420, assuming that is what you need.

          cut off bolts

I think the bolts that hold the trans to the bell housing are 9/16 twelve threads per inch. I was lucky and found a piece of threaded rod at work. If you have a cherry picker or some help, it's easy to put a good sized floor jack under the trans, un bolt it, slide it back and lift it into the cab. seemed like a good method since I didn't have a trans jack.

Matt: I think you are right... I had to "order" four bolts and cut them off. Try finding fine thread 9/16" bolts at home depot...

The first time I removed a trans from one of these trucks I made the studs, cutting the threads with a die. Several did not start straight and that was not good.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

This thread is generating all kinds of possibilities- just need to find the right info for the 420's non-synchromesh spur gear ancestor.
