  • Ring/Drive Gear

Does anyone know what the torque is on the Ring/Drive gear bolts? Think it is important but shop manual does not call out. Look to be 5/16" bolts 10 or 12 of them.

Try this thread for some good info.

If you are using the stock bolts I think a lower torque is recommended. Though someone supposedly had the stock bolts tested and said they are equivalent to grade 8.

The stock ring gear bolts were tested by Bob Stahl (Veteran Vehicles) and are said to be equivalent to grade 2.5. There are no bolts on the truck that test to grade 8.

On Joe's site a few months back the discussion was on if grade 5 or 8 was correct. One of the guys had a bolt tested for its Rockwell number:

Though discussions like this is why I just followed Charles advice and installed new grade 8 hardware, you then at least know what you have.

          Very interesting...

Sometime when you have a minute, run a file over a grade 8 bolt and then try the same test on a stock ring gear bolt and tell me what your observations are.
