  • 1983 D150 Royal questions

I recently bought a 1983 D150 Royal lwb with a utline bed. I am guessing some parts like new door panels are going to be really tough to find if indeed any exist at all ( it has power windows in it)
Does anyone know of a source for either used door panels or someone who might rehab ones?
I am also going to have to buy a used passenger window motor
Also does this truck have a mechanical fuel pump in it, and if so how easy are those to find? I am guessing that Chrysler still has some of those?
Also is it easy to find replacement carpet for this truck.
The truck spent most of it life in Texas and the last few years in Colorado and there is virtually no rust on it.
There is a local guy here that does seats so I will be able to get the seat redone
The truck has a 318 2 barrel Holley, a tourqueflite with a 2.95 rear end in it.
I already found a factory am/fm stereo with cassette that I want to replace the radio in the truck with. I am guessing that any decent speakers should work in it. (It needs new speakers)
I will be driving it to Ron in Indiana's rally at his shop on the 16th and 17th of May
I was able to buy a factory service manual for cheap off ebay ($26.00)
now to find a parts manual
Thanks for any help on this

Carb'ed vehicles usually had mechanical fuel pumps, yours should. Any good parts store will have it.

        1983 D150 Royal Questions

I found the fuel pump right on the engine and the fuel filter right next to it. I am thinking of putting the fuel filter next to the carb so it can be changed more easily

I'd leave the fuel filter where it's at so the engine heat won't boil the gas out of it. You don't have to replace the filter that often to make the change. Those door panels may be hard to come by with the power windows. But you never know what may pop up. I can see if a guy in Indy will look for some at Pull-A-Part. These guys have THE most organized and cleanest salvage yard anywhere. On top of that they are the Wallyworld of parts when it comes to price. I'll put out the word and see what comes back. What color interior do you have? You can always paint the panels too with the new plastic paints out now. I got your registration yesterday and hope you get your printer installed. We'll see on the 16th. Ron

The junkyard by me has a few trucks and Ramchargers. Next time I go through there, I will look for electric windows and door panels.

As Ron said - what color interior do you have and what color door panels would you like.

              1983 D150 Royal questions

The truck is a chocolate brown with a beige interior. it has the Royal interior in it and believe it or not there were only 3 interior colors in 1983
red blue and beige, according to the brochure that was available at the dealership, which I have bought. The seat is a cobination of cloth and vinyl
It also has a leather wrapped steering wheel and has 4 spokes. It was an extra cost option.
I put new pads on the front and adjusted the back ones
It sure is great to be able to drive a Dodge truck again( Is there any other kind??)

When ever some one asks me how I like my Dodge I always say, "Why is there something else?" They usually give me that Huh? look or don't know how to respond. As far as interior colors Dodge never did have a lot of choices especially with the later model trucks with only the grey interior for awhile. I guess the only good thing is it's not hard to find parts that way. We'll see what we can come up with for your doors.

                  1983 D150 questions

This is a problem that I have been dealing with on and off since I drove the truck home from Denver
I am unsure whether it is a carb problem or fuel pump problem or both
sometimes the truck is next to impossible to start and sometimes it is fine sometimes it hesitates alot and then sometimes not at all.
once in a while it will stall and I almost can't get it started again and this is with a brand new battery
I know that the 2 barrel holley carb has the smallest jets in it.
I recently replaced the gas filter and it helped some but the problem still persists
I am wondering if I should replace the fuel pump and rebuild/rejet the carb, or just buy a rebuilt carb and a fuel pump from Mopar? (not looking for chinese crap from parts stores. I did good with NAPA for brake pads though

You might look into a fuel pressure gauge first. This lets you know what's going on with the pump....If you're confident rebuilding your carb, then go for it, but carbs do wear out so it might be better in the long run to go new. Nothing worse than spending $40 on rebuilding a carb only to have it still not work because of a non-replaceable part being worn out....... On all the older motors (high mileage) I ran I would remove & clean the spark plugs once a month. It improved the starting, running & mileage. Carb'ed engines w/o all the computer stuff to compensate tend to be more sensitive to a gummed-up plug than their modern FI counterparts.

I think it's a carb problem in that it lived in Denver at what 5000 ft and now you're in the flatlands of Indiana of say 780 ft? A carb kit isn't much and it's a fairly simple job to rebuild it. Unless the throttle shafts are worn it should be fine to rebuild. I'd pay close attention to the accelerator pump linkage location and the float level. I would think if it were the fuel pump it would affect the drivabilty to more of an extent. I never was a big Holly fan.

                        1983 D150 Royal questions

I am looking at having to put shocks on the truck and was wondering what are good decent shocks to put onthe D150? Is there anyplace decent that puts shocks on besides Sears that sells decent shocks?
The truck has electric trailer brakes, but I am not looking to tow anything and the amount of hauling that I wlll do is minimal.
I am looking forward to seeing Ron and the Indiana Dodge folks on Saturday, I can hardly wait!

Monroe shocks have always been good but I haven't needed any in a while to know if they went chinese too. Doesn't Midas do shocks? I do all my own work so I'm a little at a loss here.
We're looking pretty good for a turn out on Saturday, just be sure to leave the rain home ha ha.

I was once told that in all the searching for various shocks, there are only really two manufactures in the world that made all the various brands of shocks. Or at least common use, everyday type shocks.

I've always wondered the validity of the statement, but in a way I could see it being true.

You may want to price out a set of Rancho 5000 shocks. Summit Racing has them at $48 a piece. If you read the fine print, I believe there is a rebate on the second shock for half price if purchased by the end of the month. Should give you a set for $150.

It's a fairly straight forward job to put on. Couple hours at the most and you don't really need anything fancy.
