  • Got a couple Questions

I am new to the forum, but not new Mopar. First a little background- I have a 1989 D-150 4x4. 318 w/727. I just got done doin a complete swap from EFI to Carb. It now has an Edelbrock 600 with a standard 4-bbl intake. Honestly more of a pain than what I thought it would be.

Anyway my first question is ever since the swap the truck will not idle correctly. Either too lean or too rich, there is no happy median. The carb was completely re-built by a trusted Carb Specialist here locally. I have done everything under the sun to get this truck to stop going through plugs like water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lastly is on the drivetrain. Does anyone know what the factory stall is on this truck. It feels like the TC is going out but am not sure if it is just because of it having a higher stall. I am getting shutter on take off, but only in Drive. If I drop it down to first it does fine. Fluid full and good and doesnt smell burnt.

Sorry for such a long post, but I am running out of ideas. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your transmission isn't kicking down automatically into first gear. If this is the case then you are putting a bigger load on the engine at a low rpm by taking off in 2nd or 3rd gear. This would cause the shudder.

Your kickdown linkage should be inspected and adjusted if necessary. If that looks good you may want to pull the valve body out and inspect it.

Since you did a conversion to a carb I would suspect that its your kickdown linkage.

Yeah I have been playin with the linkage since I did the swap. At first I had it set way to high and it wouldn't shift out of first until almost 4000rpm. I will double check it. If not I will pull the VB.

      Thanks for the info.

Does that have linkage like the older ones or is a cable?

It is the older style. I have been thinking about switching to a Lokar Kickdown cable. I had one on my built Dakota and it worked great just a little on the pricey side.

Is your tranny controlled by the computer? That would be for converter lockup and OD if it has it. I know you said 727 but some refer to the 518 OD trans as a 727 also. I'm not sure what yrs they started that but I know on my jeep I have a 46rh or 518 OD tranny that I control the OD and converter lockup with 2 toggle switches. If I forget to shut off either one when I stop it will act as what your describing. Also you might check the timing. On my 91 318 you have to disconnect the temp senser to set the timing or you will be about 7-8 degrees retarded. That will make a big diff on bot end.

No the trans is not controlled by the ECU. Mine is a standard 727 3spd. The temp sensor is no longer a factor with mine since I did the Carb swap. The timing is controlled with the vacuum advance now. I appreciate the help. I will have to work on the issues at a later date since I recently blew the engine up. Man that Carb made a lot more power than the 2bbl EFI.
