I got the inner bearings pressed off but they didn't press the outer bearings so I'll have to take them back for that. When pressing off the bearings it caused the seals to come out of the housing. I'll replace the seals as well. The tie rod came out very well so it's good to go after new ends. I ordered new hoses, seals and another caliper today from Napa. My brake parts house will have a better price on rotors and shoes and will turn the drums. It will be nice to have brakes on this truck rather than play with the gear shifter to move it around.

Hadn't thought of that. If the track and gears were the same that would be a good idea I guess?

Yogibare143, thanks a big one. That's the best info I've gotten yet. I am on the right track at least on the tear down although I don't have the "special"tool. A press is doing the same thing. The torque specs are a big help too. Now to gather the parts and start washing the old grease out of everything. Reassembly should go well with the help of that video.

Dr Dent...last minute question& request... please

Ron can a fulltime truck have a limited slip rear? would it be worth it? is limited slip more of a parttime 4x4 feature? based on your judgement please research and install a mild limited slip for Canyon Rose.
I can't have Bergen County Power Wagons flagship vehicle stuck in a snow mound at the mall, especially when its full of cheerleaders.

My 78 had a factory limited slip rear axle and it made a world of difference. I was thinking the same thing so I'm on top of it. My 01 has limited slip also and again wouldn't have it any other way. I'm sure some of the guys will offer other alternatives to limited slip such as lockers. I'll take into consideration the kind of driving the Rose will see most of the time. I wouldn't leave you hanging out there at the mall parking lot. Cheerleaders???? I took the drums in to have them turned and found out this shop can't get rotors. I was bummed. Said OK I'll look elsewhere. Called Autozone, same thing not available. Called my trusty Napa and after a search on the computer he found a set in.....Iowa. Coming UPS next week. I have the rest of the parts just need to get the bearings cleaned for reassembly. Probably work on that as much as I can after this new snow storm blows through. I also got a new tip for my stud welder today so I can continue pulling dents.

Is that limited slip a 4:10? I never knew they did that. That would be great in a full time truck.

I have limited slip in my CTD, dad's doesn't and it makes a WORLD of difference, can't imagine in a fulltime - unstoppable?

My 78 had 4:10 gears with a limited slip. It was pretty hard to beat and I pulled a lot of stuck vehicles out of the snow. Three of them were semis hung up in snow banks. With locking out the transfer case it really pulled. I'm assuming this 75 has 4:10s but will check today during the brake install.

How can you tell if a truck has limited slip? I have plenty of snow here for a test, if that will do it. Would it be stamped somewhere or on a tag?

KRB64 I'm in deep do do with this axle. We got everything pressed off the hubs and started cleaning today. The outer bearing housing on the left side is chewed up at the seal opening. The hub shaft has a gouge in it also. If your dad still has that 44 I could really use that hub and housing that unbolts through the rotor with the 6 bolts. Email me at 59redtruck(at)frontier.com so we can work this out. I'd really appreciate it thanks. Ron

Chewie the easiest way I know of is to raise both rear wheels off the ground, If they both turn the same direction you have a limited. If one goes the opposite direction it's and open. Andrews method sounds interesting but I've never had that kind of luck, with cheerleaders that is. I have been high centered with 3 wheels blowing snow everywhere. With an open rear diff you'll have one front and one rear spinning even with full time. I loved full time on those patchy roads with bare spots and snow covered. I would just pull the TC in HiLoc when it got hairy and motor right through. No need to get out an lock the hubs. There was always the concern back in the day about gas mileage but it only dropped one MPG on average. Now I had headers, a factory 4 barrel, thermoquad and a duel snorkel air cleaner with a fresh air trap door. When I opened up the TQ with that trap door the sound was great. Watching the gas gauge drop was another thing. haha. But that 360 pulled!

Thats done with the motor off & tranny in neutral. Just turn the wheel by hand. You can also determine your axle ratio at this point too.

Man would I love to have one of those...

                                BTW - Email sent, Ron.
