And make sure it sits tight against the manifold so no leaks. Hope you replaced all those old stiff & cracked vacuum lines while you were at it?

Don't be frustrated if it acts up when you first start it up. You'll likely need to make some adjustments & fine tune. Sometimes even go back in & readjust the pump or secondaries, etc.

    Hang with it.

When setting the pump, what do I measure to?

It should have been in the instructions according to the application. If it's the carb I'm thinking of it has a small clip that goes on one of the grooves on the accelerator pump shaft. It sets the amount of gas that's shot in the carb throat when you punch the throttle.

I think the carb is good now, I pulled the intake today. The bolt back by the distributer is a pain in the butt to get off, got the intake gaskets also. Any tips on cleaning and putting the intake back on?

Thankyou, intake is off and all cleaned up ready to put back on. My intake gaskets came with cork gaskets for the front and back, should I use them? or just use the black rtv? I will try to put the intake back on tomorrow after work.

Those cork gaskets are worse than the other style. Use the RTV and throw those cork gaskets in the trash. Be sure to get RTV where the head meets the block at the edge of the lifter valley. A good bead of 1/4 to 3/8" in place of the gasket will do. Anymore and it just gets into the lifter valley to cause problems.

He's right, the instructions came with the kit. Which carb is it exactly? The 2brl Carter on my '76 318 is adjusted by measuring from the top of the piston to the deck. There's one or two tiny screws that you loosen & tighten to get that while holding the primaries down (or up, I forget but thats a rough scenario).

It is a Carter 2 barrel, 6537S. The instructions say the pump is set at half inch. Also the metering rods, not sure how to adjust them, the instructions are carp. Thanks.

Got the intake painted and back on, I hope to finish adjusting the carb and put it all back together tomorrow.

She is alive! All put back together and running, runs good, when I shut it down it back fired out the carb, not bad, just alittle. I did adjust the two front screws some, to get it to idel better. Still hesitates when I push the pedal down, also, it is hard to start now when the motor is warm. What do I have to adjust to fix this problem?

I think you still need to look at the timing either at the distributor or the timing chain. Get a timing light and see what it looks like at the timing marks on the crank pulley. If you can't get a timing light try moving the distributor a little one way or the other while at idle. Then tighten the bolt and test drive it. Also check the vacuum hoses for any leaks. Timing light will help a bunch.

I think you are right, I found a timing light on craigslist for 20$. I think I will get it. What should the timing be on my 318?

I agree, the instructions are almost useless, they at least could lay it out more logical but when you have one package for like 150 applications thats what you get I guess.

What color did you paint the intake? If it's a non-mopar color that could cause the hesitation...

Sounds like you may want to readjust the pump a little if its not coming on quick enough to stop the hesitation. Lay a straight edge across the top and then use the little measuring thing that came in the kit or a real one and re-set. Make sure those little screws are tight enough so it doesn't slip - but don't over tighten, they'll snap off quicker than you think.

But first I'd check the timing like Ron suggested. You may not be able to set it to factory with all the slop in the old engine (is it like 8* BTD? Thats memory but I could be thinking of my Toyota too...). May have to set by "feel".

Didi you replace all the vacuum lines with new?

I painted the intake Dodge light blue, so I think Im ok there. I will get a timing light and see if thats my problem. I still need to get new vacuum lines, only 2 of them to replace.
