            2nd gen fuel pump

I have an 01 with just over 100,000 miles and yes I have replaced the lift pump because I felt some surging one day while cruising along. Checked the pressure and almost dead. Changing one takes under an hour, it costs about $150. I put a pressure indicator LED on my A pillar when I replaced the pump and put another spare pump under the back seat (just in case). I have an Edge chip under the hood and the truck is an animal. Its one of the things that happen to this series truck. Not a big deal to me, I just drive it and enjoy it. I now have one second generation diesel, two first gens and just picked up a WM300 all on the farm. I tinker on them all, all of the time. So far the one that needs the most work is the PW but its all fun. People look at me a like I'm on the edge, they may be right.

Look upon it as being on the leading edge.

Have you done anything different with the crankcase vent on the 2001? Do you still have the catch bottle?

What transmission do you have and what do you get for mileage with the chip?

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

Is surging a tip off? I have that suspect pump, in my 2nd Gen. I have noticed that when in cruise control mode, when climbing a grade , it seems to lightly "pulse". I had assumed that it was the cruise control 'searching' for the correct speed. Should I be worried? How did your surging manifest itself?

                  Norm,
Do yourself a favor and check the lift pump pressure,or have it done.
You can screw a guage into the top of the filter housing for a quick check.
                  Can't remember the spec,s though,LOL.
I think you want 10 or more psi at idle and at least 5-7psi at wot.

                    Thanks.
I'm assuming that the 3rd Gen pump can be installed on the 2nd Gen? Is that correct?

                      Norm,
I would have to check on that.
Right now I'm going to say No. If you mean 3rd gen. as in "common rail"
I don't think so. It runs a higher pressure LP.
But will need to check for sure. Someone else may know for sure before I can get back to ya!

Yeah, you're correct, I forgot about that. Mine is the last year before the common rail, which did start in 2002 but my 2002 is a hold over because it's the Cab/Chassis, with a 2001 body style. The 2nd gen is the only pump not rated for P100, the 1st and 3rd are rated OK for P100, but not the 2nd. Wonder if a 1st gen pump would fit?

                          crankcase catch bottle

No Gordon, my catch bottle came up MIA. I saw some oil down under when I was changing the oil one day and it was gone. I did extend the tube down where it wouldn't get all over the radiator and everything but never anything else. There are kits out there to put it back into the engine etc. but I never wanted to spend all the money. As far as my truck, it is a 6 speed HO, I get sometimes 22 to 23 mpg on summer fuel if I keep my foot out of it. Winter, it can go down as low as 17 if I'm on it hard or towing something heavy. I have the mild Edge chip called the EZ. Its enough for someone my age. It sets one back in the seat and not many rigs can go by if I don't want them to. I never dynoed it but its fun. Push on the throttle and you can see a pretty good puff of black smoke roll out the pipe till the boost gets up there and off you go. The boost gets up well over 30 and I never have to worry about the pyro temp getting too high with the amount of fuel this chip puts in. There are lots of other options out there now but when I bought mine, I thought it was the best I could find then, about 100,000 miles ago. There are some that reprogram your ECM and show all the diagnostic codes etc. I may look into one of them more seriously. I've heard these upgrades can be a little rough on the clutch, but I still have the original. I've never driven one of the newer ones but I've heard they are nice, I don't have enough room for another truck and I can't think of one I'd like to get rid of. My first gens also very good trucks. Both of them were rusted out being eastern vehicles and I bought western cabs from gas rigs and redid them. Just like driving a new vehicle. I swap the farm plate around to the one I need for the day and use it. One has a flat bed and one is a regular bed and the 01 has an extra cab when my son and I go off on hunting trips we can put some of the stuff inside. Does it sound like I love my Dodges?

One of the hot tickets for VP44 is the Vulcan fuel line kit, plus a Walbro, or Glacier Diesel pump. Sent you some links, Norm.

I think that Edge EZ also changes the waste gate pressures to allow higher turbo boost. For the most part more fuel is more EGT's, more turbo/air is less EGT's. Just like a hot cup of coffee, blow on it and it cools down. Please, don't drink your diesel fuel guys....

I missed part of the conversation...what issues were / are you having with your truck ??

I don't know if Gordon is having a specific problem, we were discussing the Gen 2 lift pump in general and the symptoms associated with pending pump failure, such as "surging". Feel free to jump in!
