  • Canadian Dell Support

    So I started up the new computer (less than two months old) this morning and nothing. Three lights, no screen, no nothing. Took it upstairs to the IT guy, motherboard is dead, he said to call dell support. I got the phone number off of a google search and gave it a ring. Mercy me a person that speaks English, and very well at that! We start to talk, she's polite, asks whats wrong, I tell her I already took the computer to our IT guy and he told me what was wrong, everything is going great, she was going to send someone. I give her the code on the back of the computer and she says "Oh that's registered in the United States, I'm at the Canadian branch, I'll transfer you to the US office." After a little hold a voice from halfway around the world answers and I spend the next two hours on the phone just for her to tell me my motherboard is fried and she'll send a representative out to fix the computer. How come the Canadians get polite people who will solve my problem in less than 10 minutes, but I have to kill my whole morning for someone halfway around the world to do the same?

      here in Canada we're all aboot being polite eh....

      That sucks about the U.S. Dell call center though

          Well the dell repair guy showed up today. Prompt service, arrived when he said he would, got the computer fixed in less than an hour. Don't know whether to be angry that my 2 month old computer died or happy that it was fixed effciently. I guess nothing new can be expected to work right out of the box (ie cars, computers, tractors) so I'll just be happy it was fixed quickly....

            Warning!

            Ah man I wished that I'd read this sooner. It seems there's this virus going around that knocks folks computer out. When you try to get ahold of the manufacturer (Dell) you wind up getting a fake tech support company that sends out one of THEIR technicians to "fix" the problems. Trouble is this technician installs whats called a reader/transmitter in your PC and now the fake tech support company monitors your activity and has access to your vital identification information!

            The technician has what appears to be "proper" identification, usually arrives promptly and has you up and running rather quickly, making you think you got a good deal. One of the most polite thefts that ever occurred.

              Well thankfully there aren't any virus' that can whipe out a motherboard on a computer, and this guy stuck several hundred dollars worth of parts into my computer so I don't think it was any sort of scam. If it is he's gonna be losing money on this one....

                Just kidding!

                Just pullin your leg. It's been boring around here since the maelstrom left.

                Glad you were able to get things corrected so quickly. My Dell studio 17 is only 6 months old and I hope that I don't have any issues with it for a long,long time. This is my first PC and I'm just barely learning how to run it. I've had a few bugs with my wireless provider but nothing with the Dell so far.

                  I would recommend getting the extended warranty on anything you buy. My last computer started to clunk out just after 2 years. This would have been several hundred dollars to fix, and without the warranty they send you a box to mail your laptop to them, two weeks later and a couple hundred dollars later you get a laptop back, with or without your harddrive in it.

                    Not sure of the lenght of my warranty term, but I can guarantee it's 1 month shorter than the life span of my PC...LOL
