Well I had 2 paragraphs typed in, hit the wrong key and its all gone. Anyways Walter Cronkite seemed more dignified than the millions of pretty faces we have today belting the world's miserys at us in hi-def 24/7. Kennedy, Nam, MLK, and Apollo were kinda before my time (I'm 40). But his voice is forever ingrained in my childhood memory. Watched Cronkite & NBC's John Chancellor while eating supper as a kid (in rural Texas lunch is called dinner & dinner is called supper).

Back in the day of 3 TV channels, no remotes, vacuum tubes and the National anthem played at sign-off every night.

Rest in peace Uncle Walter!

I was just talking about Cronkite this evening over dinner with a retired navy guy who fought during Vietnam. Cronkite's report always ended with the report of numbers injured and fatalities that day.

The world feels a bit lonelier knowing he's gone.

I liked his closing too. He felt it was his job to deliver the news and not BE the news. More business and less entertainment I guess.

Cronkite and many others of his generation were real journalists who just happened to be on television. They did not "perform" like the modern ones, who appear to either parrot what they are told to say, or put their own spin on the news- the spin usually being of a liberal persuasion.
The new ones are the pretty boys and girls, and I don't watch them much. I do watch Fox News some; they don't seem to be so far to the left like the others, especially NBC (the National Barack Channel) ;)

It's also ironic that his passing comes just days before the 40th aniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, an event that Cronkite and his colleagues covered extensively. Of course they didn't have "idol" or the other garbage shows to compete with.

I have vintage footage on DVD of Apollo flights 8,9,11,13 including all launch footage, on board & flight directors audios, EVA footage, capsule to earth television footage & splashdown/recovery. Amazing what we could do then! Now we're too busy getting our minds petted to notice.

There sure isn't anyone like Uncle Walter, I miss him, John Chancellor, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings.

I remember when JFK died 45 years ago and Walter's voice broke ever so slightly. I always thought of him with the utmost respect and admiration

I got rid of mine in early 08, don't miss all the misery being regurgetated over and over, doomsday predictions, famines, plagues & pestilence, politics, economics woes, and a cruddy weather forecast every 7 minutes.

I'd rather sat in a swing reading PWA and spitting watermelon seeds over the fence. Anyone up for some homemade ice cream?
