New Virus
This is the new virus;
The LizaMoon attack has affected more than a million legitimate sites. The attack redirects visitors to a malicious site. The site tells users that they have a virus. They are then instructed to pay for fake antivirus. You need to protect your computer before you go online.
when you pay with a credit card they steal the number and make on line purchases.
Origin is somewhere in eastern Europe
Please make sure that you are running a GOOD antivirus program, there are a lot of them that are free the one I use is AVG free edition.

name changing rogue virus
www.bleepingcomputer.com lists it as a "name changing rogue". it camoflages itself by displaying on screen, the same graphical display as the users legitimate security software.
tricks a lot of people because it looks correct to the user. Xp, vista, there are 20 varietys so far.
one dead givaway is that the phoney urgent warnings escalate as time goes by. not clicking and it ups the scare angle. gets to the point that any user would be nuts not to click it. data loss, identity theft ,computer damage, bad breath, baldness, direaah. I made up the last three but its very alarming and convincing.
this is gonna cost web businesses money. as the confidence factor will begin to outweigh the convienience factor for customers.

I just block all pop-ups. Problem solved. Plus it helps that I am very very handy with computers and can tell the difference between what I installed and something that appears to be what I installed.
I have to tell the wife to not click on any stupid link she doesnt know where it came from and to not open junk email from someone, even if she knows them, unless a message is reasonably expected.
Basically you just gotta be smart about where you go and what you release info to.

Apple FTW
I have had for over 25 years and still have an Apple computer. I have yet to have any virus, worm, trojan horse, crabs, spy ware or any other computer debilitating aliment. They may cost more initially but they pay off big time in the long run. The model I have now, G5 Power PC, that I bought in 2003 is finally starting to show its age. and will need to be replaced in the next few years.
