  • I met a couple WWII vets this morning

I met two vets of WWII in my optometrist's office today. One was a survivor of Bastogne from the 506th/101st, the other was a c-46 pilot who dropped paratroopers from the 101st on D-Day and several other drops. Both gentlemen were in their nineties but you could see them become young men before your eyes as the conversation progressed. It was truly a pleasure to listen while these men compared notes.

I grew up surrounded by men like that, hard but effective. They were preparing me for something they hoped I'd never see and at that time I couldn't comprehend.

The cook from my parent's church kitchen was
      a member of the Devil's Brigade. I didn't know
this until just a few years ago. This generation
seemed to keep a lot of their war experiences
to themselves which I completely respect. Its
always a treat when they share some of their
      stories.

I think that vets really only talk to vets about that kind of stuff. People who weren't there don't have the frame of reference to fully understand the experiences .
In some cases remembering the war reminds a vet of all the friends who didn't make it home.
