Some of you may remember Liam Colmb, A youngster I met who decided to get autographs from working people.
Both he and his mother were killed two weeks ago in a traffic collision. They were on their way to the college Liam was to start in September. Liam's step-father Roy and three year old half sister were following in another car. Roy told me that another vehicle crossed the median suddenly and struck Liam's car head on. Roy also told me that the driver was an uninsured Haitian illegal driving an unregistered vehicle.
Since Liam and his Mom moved to Ohio, he had excelled in class work and graduated a year ahead of his peers. He was looking forward to starting ROTC with an eye to becoming a Marine Corps officer.
He kept in touch regularly and informed me of his plans as they coalesced and changed. He considered me his adopted Grampa and I returned the feeling. I was looking forward to meeting his wife and children in a few years.
I'm still struggling with the notion as is Roy , that this magnificent boy with such a bright future is gone and the scum that killed him is still alive and unhurt .
I will be flying to Dayton to meet Roy and collect some of Liam's ashes. He wanted to be released over the Pacific. That's how together this boy was, he had a living trust that provided for his new baby sister and specified his preference for cremation.
I will miss this fine boy and grieve his loss. He was on his way to being a fine man. He would have turned eighteen on Sept. 6 .

I am not very good with words

That is truly sad. He sounds like he was mature beyond his years.

Try to not let any hatred develope/fester for the Haitian. He/She has taken enough from you. I do hope the courts handle things properly, but they often don't.

I hope you, Roy & the remaining family find peace during this. I'm sorry for your loss.

        Bob,
I am very sorry to hear of this. It always seems a crime when the good die young, because it is such a shame.
Just know that you and his family made a contribution and are in our thoughts and prayers.

Thank you gentlemen for your kind words. I will be heading east on wednesday to retrieve his ashes.
It's been a tough weekend around here. Tomorrow I will visit his former principal so that those who knew him may have an opportunity to organize a memorial. He was well liked at his old school .
It is unfortunate but understandable that Roy couldn't contact me as Liam's phone and laptop were in the car with them. It was unlike Liam to go very long without a message of some kind, If only to say hi. Again, Thankyou.

You are his friend even now, and bring much to ensure that his memory and spirit live on.

We had a nice Memorial at Will Rogers state beach this morning. After I got home I made a small boat shaped casket to carry his ashes out to the ocean.
Several of Liam's friends and a few of his former teachers were present.
One of the boys donned a wet suit and paddled his board past the breakers and released the casket. I was somewhat amazed by the speed with which it went out to sea.
While I was in Ohio I spent some time speaking with the Pa. State Trooper who did the investigation and I spoke by phone with the prosecutor. They both assure me the knucklehead responsible will do a substantial amount of time and will then be deported. That suits me fine.
I gave him what background I could on this exceptional boy and what his future appeared to portend. I think I impressed him with the outstanding character this boy posessed. He told me he would inform me when proceedings were complete .

I just realised the date was wrong in my previous post. it should have read 2011 instead of 2007 .

                  Saddness

Bob, this is the part of living that makes for a bitter pill. Liam sounds like someone we all would have benefited from knowing.
                  As Always, Warmest Regards,
