I have been holding the line on the subscription rate for the magazine for quite some time. I realized tonight I had no idea just how long. The last subscription rate increase was implemented with the February 2004 issue, nearly eight years ago. I just about tipped over backwards tonight when I figured that out. The January 2012 issue is about to go to print.

I have not had tiny increases each year because it is too troublesome. Someone sends the wrong amount and it would cost the amount of the error to write and inform them. Consequently, I have had larger increases, less frequently, since July of 1984.

This time too much time slipped by because I did not realize just how long it had been. There has been a great increase in printing and mailing costs in the nearly eight years that have elapsed since the last increase.

I am really forced into looking at this because of an impending change in the postal service's..... service. Our bulk mail distribution center in Cedar Rapids is going to be closed and that process will occur in Milan, Illinois. This seems insane, since Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is by no means a small place. But, the postal service is improving things, as they put it. It is going to increase the cost of mailing substantially, and the mailing will probably have to actually be delivered to Illinois by my printer, rather than Cedar Rapids.

Currently, by 12 monthly subscription, the magazine cost is $3.73 per issue. You can't buy a sandwich for that amount, and you are getting a magazine that is all Dodge, every month. Given my review of the increased costs that have been absorbed over this time period, not to mention the impending increase, and subsequent increases, I believe I have to increase the monthly cost a minimum of about $0.42.

Considering the current rate has applied for a month short of 12 years, it amounts to about 3/4% per year increase. It is not enough to cover all the increases that have occurred, and does not take into account future increases, but I need to do something to remain viable.

The value for you is content you can't get on the web, and providing service to a marvelous group of people who have been with me since July of 1984. We have some great article series going — and in the hopper — covering WWII and M-series Dodges. Also, magazine subscribers get full benefits of the forum; including access to all of the forum archives, which are substantial.

In conversation with someone it was suggested to me I don't need to explain all this. I disagree. You have all been with me for so long, and we have such a wonderful connection, it is like a big family. So I explain it all to you, as I have here. I want you to understand the circumstances and factors driving the change.

I am not exactly sure when the change will occur, but it will likely be within the next 30-60 days.

Thank you so much for your loyalty and dedication. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to speak to you Dodgers every month through the magazine.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

    Cancel my subscription!

Just kidding, I doubt anyone is going to complain about this. Just keep my magazine coming. You're really doing a great labor of love by giving us this magazine every month. Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words. Creating the magazine has been a source of great satisfaction. More genuine satisfaction that any job I have ever had. Comments from readers are wonderful.

      Thank you again.....

I think it's long overdue Gordon. I don't really see how you've managed up to this point without bumping the rate up at least enough to cover rising postage rates. So , count me in.

The postal service is really a big joke, albeit a sick one. They have not made any attempt to change with the times, and it shows. The problem as usual is the management, or lack thereof. They should remove the word service from their name because it doesn't fit.
you can count on me to renew my subscription when it is due, I don't want to miss all the words of wisdom that we get with each and every issue. Don't get that just anywhere you know

Gordon, if you recall, I have had a lot of trouble over the years with delivery of The Advertiser, even though I live only about 100 miles from you. People across the United States were receiving their issue two weeks, four weeks, even two months before I would. It seems that the distribution center in Cedar Rapids would put all of the Advertisers destined for Illinois in one "bag" and it would then get sent to Chicago. Chicago would open it and see this magazine that was addressed to somewhere downstate "outside" of the Chicago area - an obvious mistake in their mind. So, they would send it to Des Moines where the brilliant minds in charge could straighten it all out. It would then be sent to the Milan, Illinois distribution point, to Rock Island, to Reynolds, and to my box.

No one on my end was willing to accept responsibility for the problem. I believe someone on your end looked into this, probably your printer rather than your Post Office (and they probably absorbed the cost of seeing that it got put in the correct bag) and I eventually started getting my Advertisers a little quicker. I don't really know how quick as I gave up keeping track entirely before this actually happened.

I am actually tempted to be happy that Cedar Rapids will be taken out of the equation as Milan is only about 13 miles from me, and it is admittedly an impressive complex. But I can't help but wonder how far around the country my Advertiser will travel to avoid that simple 13 miles. After all, we can't have one arriving looking like it has NOT been read by every Postal employee in a two-state area. And, I do feel bad for any folks in the Cedar Rapids area who may be losing their jobs because of this brilliant move.

If I didn't get the Power Wagon Advertiser, I would miss out on all the nostalgia that comes with each and every issue free of charge, and while I know I will never be able to own a Power Wagon, I may make one of the rally's someday and have my dream of riding in one become reality.
I have a dream, which never changes from one day to the next, which is to ride in an antique Dodge that day. It could be a power wagon, or it could be a Dodge Brothers car or truck, or a prewar Dodge car or truck.
Worst of all, I wouldn't know anybody that posts on this forum. So it gotta be the best bargain in the world.

                  Gordon,
I agree with Clint, I live in Onalaska,Texas and never know when I will get my next magazine. All of our mail goes to Dallas first then to Houston then to Conroe, TX, then to Livingston, Tx and finally to Onalaska and to me. It is the 10th of December and I am still waiting on December's issue. Historically, I have been getting the issues around the 15 of each month but, who knows with Cristmas mailings when I will get it.

You only need to know although I have been a subscriber for a little over a year, I will not cancel my subscription, if you need to raise the rates.

Only wish the post office would hurry a little more, all my back issues I have read and re-read over and over.

Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year.

                    I understand, Gordon

I understand that you have to raise subscription rates. Our money gets debased every day that goes by, but not the components underlying the PWA like fuel, paper, ink, etc. The PWA is among the rare material that makes sense in my world (and I read a lot; get paid to do it). Like DB69, I wish I'll be able one day to drive all the way to the rally and put some faces onto the names appearing in this site and hear real close the rumble of Dodge trucks. Don't they say that happiness is having at least one dream unfulfilled? I'll scrounge the extra pennies by cutting on my bank fees or something like that. It's easy. Please keep up the good work, Gordon. One of your north-of-the-border subscribers.

                              2004?!

A long time to go without an increase, Gordon, considering that your costs have all gone up.

Even with the new price, the monthly magazine and the on-line forum are a good value.

Have you considered optional electronic delivery of the magazine as a way to reduce printing and distribution costs, and accelerate delivery speed?
