Does anyone know where the saying "raise your feet as you cross the state line" comes from?

Never heard it! Here's my pure SPECULATION--Moonshiners used to have trip wires at ground level surrounding their steels that would act as an alarm when intruders (feds) tried to sneak up..Feds had to high step to not hit the trip wires...so maybe one should mind their manners (tongue) when outta state so as to not set off the locals....Like I said, pure speculation.

Performer: Better Than Ezra
Title: Coyote
Album: Deluxe
Heading out
Your heart beating in your head
Riding on
The Texas wind
Raise your feet
As you cross the state line
Waking up
The Mesa sun and the sky
All the way
To Tucumcari
And Santa Fé
Seems a stone's throw away
Coyote, coyote
Coming down
The Phoenix sun on your face
Turns it red by the afternoon
And to the right
The Grand Canyon is wide
Sing along
Needle skips in the wind
Count the stars
Of Death Valley
And in the dark
Barstow starts to fade
Coyote, coyote
Coyote, coyote
Yeah.

As far as the song goes,
it doesn't imply why a person would raise their feet. I didn't get the kicking coyote thing. I do get the gun reference. Pest control.
I have never seen one in person. Though they are supposed to be migrating this way????not sure.
Maybe the saying is strictly a western thing. I believe the author is from New Orleans.

Yep, we are covered up out here in coyotes! We'll be happy to send you a couple of thousand if you want 'em!
They've killed off most of the small game and are killing family pets. There is no closed season on them and you can use any weapon you want to take them.
In keeping with the original intent, I will add an "old saying"
The only good coyote is a dead coyote!
