My Grandmother was blinded by glaucoma and my mother has it also, but is being treated and her vision is fine.
So I naturally figured that I was next. After several days of tests and doctors, the good news is that I don't have glaucoma and probably never will. The bad news is that I have a detached retina. I had surgery Friday morning and there is a 50/50 chance that I will get 80% of my vision back. I think I will do better than that because I'm a perfectionist, but we won't know for 8-10 weeks.
In the meantime I have an eyeball full of gas to replace the retinal fluid and I have to stay in one position, leaning left at a 45 degree angle, for 10 days to keep the gas from causing harm to the retina...THAT is worse than the surgery! ha! ha!
Thanks to all for your concerns and prayers!

        Hi Norm,
        Building looks great!!
Sorry to hear of your eye problem.
Best thing to do and it's real hard, is to take it easy for the allotted time.
Especially once the eye clears up and you can see and feel well.
Ask me how I know; Iv' e had a detached retina many years ago in my left eye.
After the first surgery and I felt great, naturally I didn't listen and started back to work and tinkering around with my trucks and equip. Wasn't long same symptoms. Surgery two,all fine thought I was taking it a lot easier and "walla" Surgery three! All in the same eye.
Doc said you haven't been listening to me. I said yes doc. I was doing very little last time.
Not what I told you. "Absolutely nothing until I say" I mean you have to be careful when you have a bowl movement.
Your straining things you don't even realize.
Well at least I can see somewhat out of it now, although upper and lower left perennial vision is gone, and it's a bear in sunlight,as the pupil won't fully adjust anymore.(close,ha)
So Norm wish you the "Best Of Luck" And DON'T do anything!
        Take Care

            Norm,
I didn't mean to scare you, but what I found is most don't realize, including myself, how delicate this surgery is,and what all can affect it's healing.
Even just simple head movements, getting out of a chair, etc can strain it.
Think of it as gluing wet one ply tissue paper together.
Relax Norm, You'll be healed up in no time!

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

It is a pretty amazing deal! My doc thinks that I've had the perforations since birth, it just took 60 years for them to get fluid into them and separate from the ol' eyeball...
The amazing thing was seeing them get into the little submarine and shrinking Rachael Welch down small enough for surgery...or did I dream that while watching golf???

Count your lucky stars Norm, (not the phantom images in your injured eye) the figurative ones.
At least you're not in traction.
It always seems the cure is worse than the disease. But perservere .

                            Norm,
THat is amazing. I had been wondering if you recently had a blow to the head, like with an an accident, but I guess not.
Tom's advice sounds good, but I bet very tough, not being able to do anything until the retina reattaches down again.
                            Take care,
                            Dave

The math isn't working for me. How could you have had them for 60 years? You told me you were 43.....

                                Take it slow Norm

I think a detached retina brought Suger Ray Leonard's boxing career to an end. I tried to think of something clever to say, but all I came up with is; Take care of yourself, you are respected and admired by more folks than you know.
